Foodie Friday: Time for a Recap!

We’ve tried so many new places over the past several months that I thought there would be no better way to start May than with a Foodie Friday recap so you could have a wealth of places to try out this beautiful May weekend!

So, take a look at some of the great new spots we’ve featured recently and pick one or two or three or four to check out with friends and family this weekend!

 

LSA Burger Company

For our first ever Foodie Friday Road Trip, we headed up to Denton Square to try out the infamous LSA Burger Company. A gourmet burger joint, LSA first opened its doors in November of 2013 within the old Denton County Hamburgers location and did a lot of work to bring in their own vibe to the location. Their outdoor patio would be perfect for enjoying the weather we’re going to have this weekend and on Friday and Saturday evenings, they have live music! The whole restaurant pays homage to Texas music legends – even their menu! When you go, you must start out with some of their brisket queso which is topped with smoked brisket and a Dr. Pepper BBQ sauce. And if you’re brave (and hungry) enough, you can order their Spirit of a Hero which is their monstrous burger topped with Texas Mac ‘n Cheese, bacon, spinach, tomato and red onion. Plus $2.00 from each sale of the Spirit of a Hero burger gets donated to SpirtOfAHero.org. After re-visiting these pictures, I really might need to get back out there this weekend myself.

Pita Houzz

One of the most educational Foodie Friday experiences we’ve had was at Pita Houzz located in Highland Village. While we were there, General Manager, Q, did a great job of introducing us to Mediterranean cuisine and explaining their authentic processes for creating their dishes. And for those of you who are also new to Mediterranean cuisine, Pita Houzz offers a great option where you can “build your own dish,” so you can order it just the way you want it! My favorite part about our meal was the gyro sandwich stuffed with freshly-carved gyro meat, Tzatziki sauce, lettuce, tomato, onion and feta cheese. Their pita chips are made right there in the restaurant and their pita bread comes from a bakery that specializes in Mediterranean food. Their hummus is the absolute best I’ve ever had – it puts that grocery store stuff to shame – and I also loved their signature spinach salad! So, if you’ve always wanted to try Mediterranean food but have been too scared, head to Pita Houzz and get your own intro to this delicious cuisine!

So-Cal Tacos

Our next Foodie Friday road trip took us to Southern California by way of Grapevine as we tried out So-Cal Tacos. We quickly learned why this place has become so many people’s go-to taco shop – between their delicious food and their passionate owner, So-Cal Tacos truly offers a one-of-a-kind experience. Owner, Scott Wooley, decided to open his restaurant after he searched the area for a good fish taco and couldn’t find anything! They originally started out with the So-Cal Taco Truck, named Woody, (one of the first food trucks in the Dallas-Fort Worth area) as a way to travel the area and inspire others to follow their own dreams. When you go, make sure to try their famous chips and queso, their fish tacos and their nachos. Everything is absolutely delicious and you truly feel like you’ve taken a little detour into Southern California! So, go visit Scott this weekend!

Sara Donuts

After months of hearing about Sara Donuts on the Flower Mound Cares Facebook page, we decided to finally put our diets aside for a morning and head over for some donuts! And are we ever glad that we did! This place is so cheery and cute and their donuts are absolutely delicious! Now I know what all the fuss was about. But what is it that makes these donuts different than all the others? Sara Donuts offers a wonderful mix of traditional and and unique donut options. You can choose from some classics like plain yeast glazed or chocolate sprinkled or you can go a little more adventurous and try options like their gluten-free Strawberry Shortcake or Greek Yogurt frosted donuts. No matter which ones you choose, you’re sure to enjoy them! So, go grab some for breakfast tomorrow morning. But I must warn you – if you don’t get there early, you’ll miss out on them so be sure to get there before they’re all gone!

Black Walnut Cafe

I was so excited to hear that Black Walnut Cafe was opening a location in Flower Mound and after anxiously awaiting the opening for months, our team was thrilled to have a team lunch there a few months ago! Black Walnut Cafe offers all kinds of menu items for breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner. There’s definitely a reason this place has been packed since it opened! It offers a wonderful, warm ambiance and they have great patio seating which would be perfect for brunching this weekend! My personal favorite is the Doc’s Krazy Turkey Burger which is a seasoned turkey patty, Swiss cheese, sauteed mushrooms, tomato, avocado, spinach and pesto mayonnaise and it comes served with sweet potato fries. It’s DELICIOUS. And save some room for dessert when you go – you can choose from one of their local-made gelatos or baked goods which are all incredible. Jump on the bandwagon if you haven’t already and try this place out this weekend!

Meat U Anywhere BBQ

Without a doubt, one of my favorite Foodie Fridays we’ve ever done was Meat U Anywhere BBQ in Grapevine. Kari told us we HAD to try this place after going with her husband and after hearing the word “barbecue,” I was happy to oblige. Owner, Andy Sedino, gave us a great lesson on barbecue and on how to run a business. I was truly inspired after we left. Andy grew up in West Texas and after working for a regional BBQ franchise for over 10 years, came to a point in his life where he had the opportunity to open his own restaurant and share his family’s passion for food with other people. Meat U Anywhere opens at 6:00am serving their brisket tacos (which I hear are to die for) and then serves delicious barbecue the rest of the day. When you go, be sure to try out their Jalapeno Mac ‘n Cheese! You won’t regret it!
