Foodie Friday: Home Taste Asian Restaurant

Home Taste Asian Restaurant is one of Flower Mound’s newest restaurants. And the owners, Za and San San, have one of the most inspirational and amazing stories we’ve heard throughout all of our Foodie Friday experiences.

Both Za and San San grew up in Burma, where they were a part of forced labor because of their Christian beliefs. After years of being persecuted by the military-ruled government, Za and San San finally built up the courage to escape in the middle of the night across the border to Malaysia where they sought refugee status.  There Za worked as a cook and made several other trips back until he was able to bring other members of his family to the refugee camp.  This family has faced hardships that would have made anyone want to quit.  Za and San San have a deep belief in their own American dream.  We talked in detail on and off camera and there was not a dry eye in the room.

Za has spent the last 12 years learning to cook all varieties of Asian cuisine by studying other chefs, reading books and even watching YouTube videos. He also loves using his creativity to come up with new and inventive dishes and absolutely loves sharing those creations with his customers.

I know we’ve said before at other restaurants that you can really feel the love in each dish, but I don’t think I’ve ever felt that as strongly as at Home Taste Asian.

If you are a fan of sushi, you will absolutely love Home Taste Asian’s sushi selection. A Spicy Tuna Roll is always my go-to and theirs is fantastic. We also ordered their Rainbow Roll and it was so fresh and had wonderful flavor.

Home Taste Asian also serves a fusion of several other Asian dishes like Orange Chicken, Fried Rice, Pad Thai, Ramen, soups, and some Asian-inspired salads.

The fact that incredible people like Za and San San chose to pursue the ‘American Dream’ by opening their first restaurant in our town is amazing to me. And I believe that warrants our 100% respect and support.

You can feel the passion they both have as they talk about this opportunity they’ve created for themselves through their courageous journey and they are both determined to succeed. And I absolutely believe they will succeed if we, as residents of Flower Mound, help support them in achieving this dream.

I can’t wait for you to visit Home Taste Asian and meet Za and San San for yourself. Prepare to have your life changed when you do.

As always, be sure to let them know that Jay Marks sent you!

Foodie Friday: Gearing Up for the Grand Opening of Mi Dia From Scratch

It’s an exciting time to be a Foodie here in Flower Mound with the opening of so many fantastic restaurants in our area recently!

We know many of you are on pins and needles waiting for the Grand Opening of Mi Dia From Scratch here in Flower Mound, so this week we visited the original location in Grapevine to get a little sneak peek as to what you Flower Mound Foodies can expect when our location opens.

As much as I can’t believe I’m going to admit this – I had never been to Mi Dia before! And I’m now really upset that it has taken me this long to eat there. But it also made me incredibly excited for their Flower Mound location to open!

We got to sit down with Executive Chef Gabriel DeLeon who opened the original location in Grapevine back in 2011. Gabriel comes from a family familiar with the restaurant business. His father opened La Margarita in Irving nearly 30 years ago and his uncle opened  Esparza’s in Historic Downtown Grapevine.

At a young age, Chef Gabriel wanted to master the art of preparing and serving five-star cuisine, so he attended culinary school and then spent several years studying at restaurants in Mexico City and New York. When he returned to Dallas, Chef Gabriel took his father’s classic Mexican dishes from La Margarita and added his own flair, incorporating ingredients like duck.

And just as the name suggests, everything is made from scratch in the restaurant. Which gives every dish and even their cocktails a fresh, authentic taste.

We couldn’t come to Mi Dia and not sample a couple of their cocktails, so we asked our waitress to choose a couple of their most popular and unique drinks to bring out. She chose their Heart of the Desert which is a margarita made with a blood orange liqueur and their Hibiscus Champagne Margarita made with a hibiscus sorbet and dry ice. It came out bubbling like a witch’s potion – very neat!

Many of you know that I’ve recently committed myself to losing 100 pounds. And if you didn’t already know, now you do and you can help support me along my journey. Because of my new commitment, I asked our waitress what the best option for a low-carb diet would be. So, Jay’s Healthy Choice option this week is their Carne Asada with a side salad instead of the rice and beans. The steak was so tender and had incredible flavor. It was a fantastic suggestion, and I was able to leave still feeling good about myself!

If you have dietary restrictions of your own, Mi Dia offers a special menu which is organized according to dietary needs. So whether you’re gluten-free, vegetarian, etc. they make it easy for you to find a dish that will work for you!

We ordered a wide array of other entrees from Mi Dia’s dinner menu as well, including: Steak and Relleno, Duck Two Ways, Wood Grilled Banana Leaf Wrapped Salmon, Pollo Agave, and Chipotle Ribs.

If you like something with some heat to it, definitely try the Steak and Relleno which is grilled skirt steak served with a relleno stuffed with jack cheese and topped with New Mexico Red and green chile sauces.

If you’re a fan of duck, their Duck Two Ways is fantastic. My wife, Stacy, who doesn’t even usually like duck was a fan of this dish!

Their Banana Leaf Wrapped Salmon was FANTASTIC. It was cooked perfectly and had amazing flavors.

If you want something kind of creamy, their Pollo Agave was a fantastic option as it comes served with a Shitake cream reduction and whipped potatoes.

And their Chipotle Ribs were fall-off-the-bone delicious and were also packed full of flavor.

Then we topped things off with a special birthday treat for Kathy in our office – their Rocky Road Bliss which they make right there in the restaurant. SO good.

We’re all aboard the Mi Dia bandwagon now and absolutely cannot wait for their Grand Opening. Which is expected to happen mid-August, so we don’t have that much longer to wait, Foodies! Their Flower Mound location is designed exactly like their Grapevine location, so it will feature the same great bar, decor and patio area that you’ve grown to love.

We can’t wait to welcome Mi Dia to Flower Mound, and in the meantime, we might be taking a couple more trips to Grapevine.

*Mi Dia From Scratch in Flower Mound will be located at the corner of Windsor and FM 2499 – across the street from Flower Mound Presbyterian.

Foodie Friday: World-Class Sushi at Edohana

Something you may or may not know about our team is that we LOVE sushi. It’s probably one of my personal favorite kind of meals to go enjoy. And our Buyer Specialist, Nina Boyd, is also an experienced sushi connoisseur, so this week we visited one of her personal favorite local sushi restaurants, Edohana Sushi in Flower Mound.

From the moment we walked inside, I loved the warm, inviting atmosphere. And we were greeted by 11-year owner, Kimmy Seon, who gave us a lesson on what makes their sushi so fresh compared to many other sushi restaurants.

Our Buyer Specialist, Nina Boyd, with Owner Kimmy Seon.

All of their ingredients are delivered fresh daily. And her chef (who has been preparing sushi for 16 years) is a master at utilizing the fish so that he only serves the freshest and best cuts in their sushi.

This all stems from training Kimmy received after studying for several years under some of the best sushi restaurant chefs in Japan and running restaurants and hotels in three different countries.

We sat next to a couple who are also regulars of Edohana and who said they keep coming back because of the incredible food at such a great value. Plus, you can’t beat the convenience of it!

I loved absolutely everything that we tried. And the best part is that while we ate a lot, I didn’t leave our meal feeling overly stuffed. Which I attribute to the freshness and quality of what we were served.

We started out with some of their Jalapeno Poppers – lightly battered and deep-fried jalapenos stuffed with crab meat. They had a gentle heat to them which was balanced by the richness of the crab meat.

And we also ate their Tempura Fried Shrimp which were gigantic! Those were some quality shrimp – definitely not something you can get just anywhere here in DFW.

When it came to trying some of their sushi options, we sampled both some sashimi and roll menu items including: the Sashimi Sampler made with 5 pieces of assorted fish; their tuna tower; the Green Hulk made with shrimp tempura and crab meat and topped with avocado, crawfish, wasabi and sweet sauce; and the spicy tuna roll.

Then to top everything off, we completed our meal with a serving of their Tempura Ice Cream which was the perfect mix of crunchy batter and silky smooth ice cream.

This was honestly some of the best sushi I’ve ever had, so if you’re a sushi connoisseur like us and you’ve never been to Edohana, hop in your car and get yourself there immediately! We are so lucky to have this gem right here in our community!

Edohana Sushi is located at 1900 Long Prairie Rd, Flower Mound TX 75028.

Foodie Friday: Burgers & Brats – Authentic Burger Joint Right Here in Flower Mound

When you’re shopping near the Highland Ranch Shopping Center in Flower Mound, you my not expect that you’d stumble upon an authentic burger joint right in the middle of it all. But you’d be missing out! And if you’ve never experienced Burgers & Brats, you definitely have been missing out!

Whenever I’m in the mood for a great burger, Burgers & Brats is the first local place I think of. From the moment you step through the door you’ll feel as though you’ve been transported to some small-town burger stop with its cozy seating and exposed grill area.

And burgers are obviously not the only things they specialize in (given their name). Burgers & Brats also has a fantastic selection of German-style pork sausage and pork-and-beef sausage for all you brat enthusiasts out there. It all comes direct each day from Fischer’s German Meat Market in the German town of Muenster, Texas. And they’re served up on fresh-baked bread rolls from Bayer’s Kolonialwaren und Backeri which is also in Muenster. So, no place better to find an authentic German brat! That’s for sure.

I love that you can watch them grill up your food from start to finish. With their burgers, they start with 1/2-pound of high-quality beef which is perfectly seasoned and topped with whichever ingredients you choose.

If you like your burger with some additional heat to it, give the Road Rage a try which is sprinkled with cayenne pepper and topped with pepperjack cheese and jalapenos.

For a burger with a BBQ twist, you can order the Speed Bump which comes served with bacon crumbles, chopped onions, cheddar cheese and a smoky BBQ sauce.

They’ve also got options that come with fried eggs on top, bleu cheese, or pineapple. There’s even one called the Frito Pie Burger! Um… yum! And if you want a burger made with something other than beef, they also have a Turkey Burger, a Tuna Burger and a Veggie Burger.

Or if you want something entirely different, Burgers & Brats also has a couple of sandwich options including their Philly Cheesesteak, their Reuben Sandwich and some chicken sandwich options.

I also LOVE their truffle fries which are crisped to perfection and come sprinkled with parmesan cheese and served with a side of aioli.

Burgers & Brats certainly draws a crowd around lunch time – and there are people who even drive from Fort Worth to come eat here! So, there’s a testimonial for you.

Hope you all have a delicious Easter weekend, and if burgers sound like something that’ll hit the spot, be sure to head to Burgers & Brats!

*Burgers & Brats is located in the Highland Ranch Shopping Center at 6100 Long Prairie Rd Ste 300, Flower Mound TX 75028.

Foodie Friday: Newcomer Mio Nonno in Lakeside DFW

Remember last week when I mentioned how happy we’ve been here at Foodie Friday with all the new local restaurants that have opened in the past month? We’re happy to report that we had another incredible experience at a new restaurant this week. So, thank you Mio Nonno in Lakeside DFW!

Mio Nonno’s menu is inspired by central and southern Italian cuisine and was expertly crafted by Chef Ati Mala who co-owns both the Flower Mound and Allen locations with his childhood best friend, Noti Krasniqi. Before opening their restaurants here in Texas, Chef Ati and Noti co-owned a Mediterranean restaurant called Andrra in the Hamptons where they served high-end cuisine largely inspired by the abundance of seafood available in that area.

Both Noti and Chef Ati pride themselves on being able to introduce Flower Mound area residents to Italian dishes they may never have experienced before – and certainly not the way they prepare them! They take inspiration from some of the top Italian restaurants in New York and deliver it to their customers here in Texas for an incredible value.

Let’s stop wasting time and get to talking about some of their delicious food, shall we?

Now, I usually don’t spend the time to talk about a bread basket at an Italian restaurant since it comes so standard, but Mio Nonno’s bread was so out of this world that it deserves an honorable mention. It is so fluffy and has an incredible flavor that’s highlighted by the smidge of sea salt sprinkled on top. And it’s incredible dipped in their oil & vinegar or the leftover sauce of any of the dishes on their menu.

From Mio Nonno’s Antipasti menu Noti brought us their crispy-fried polenta served in a gorgonzola cream; their Gamberi Arrabiata which are sauteed shrimp in a white wine lemon sauce (this is a great dish to dip the bread in); their steamed mussels served in a seafood tomato broth; and their fresh-made potato gnocchi served up in a cheese sauce made up of fontina, gorgonzola, pecorini and reggiano cheeses.

Noti mentioned that one of their most popular dishes from their Allen location is actually their Eggplant Parmesan. And it became popular after they decided to introduce it to customers at no cost. When customers found out it was eggplant they were eating (and loving), they were shocked! But with it’s perfectly fried exterior and the delicious capellini pasta it’s served over, it’s not hard to see why this quickly became a customer favorite! All of Mio Nonno’s string pasta is made fresh by a local Dallas pasta-maker and you can taste the quality and freshness in each of the dishes it’s used in.

In addition to the Eggplant Parmesan we also sampled their Prosciutto & Arugula pizza made in their wood-fired oven; their Russia pasta made with rigatoni, grilled chicken and a spicy vodka sauce; their Chicken Caccioatore; and their Lobster Ravioli.

We also had the opportunity to try the dish that Chef Ati and Noti are probably the most proud of and that is inspired by some of those top New York Italian restaurants.

Their Ciopino (which they say you can’t get the way they make it at any other restaurant in DFW) is essentially a seafood medley soup served in a light seafood broth (called fume). All of the various seafood (which includes fresh salmon, shrimp, calamari, clams, scallops and mussels) are perfectly cooked and the broth has an incredible flavor. Definitely recommend!

We’re here to tell you that these guys came to PLAY here in Flower Mound. If you’re a fan of Italian cuisine, you are going to love restaurant. We’re confident they’re going to do very well here – they’ve already received lots of love! It’s the perfect atmosphere whether you need a spot for a fun lunch out, a business dinner, or for a romantic meal. Even if you just want to sit at their bar and enjoy a drink while watching the game, Mio Nonno has a space for you!

We’d absolutely recommend you find a way to get over to Mio Nonno this weekend if you haven’t already and be introduced to some Italian dishes you may have never even heard of before. We promise you won’t regret your visit!

*Mio Nonno in Flower Mound is located at 2450 Lakeside Parkway Ste 100, Flower Mound TX.
