Foodie Friday: Authentic Indian Cuisine at Urban Tadka

(Preface: If you’re looking for an expert opinion on Indian food, that’s not what this is. But if you’re an inexperienced Indian-food connoisseur like us and have always been curious to give Indian food a try, then this blog post is perfect for you.)

I think our entire team is now converted to Indian cuisine thanks to Urban Tadka! Now admittedly, we didn’t really know what we were ordering when we ordered it, but everything we ordered was delicious and I can’t wait to get back and try some more Indian food!

The Flower Mound location of Urban Tadka is their second here in DFW and both are owned and operated by Happy and Mona Singh who are long-time residents of Flower Mound.

Mona Singh and her son, Karan.

Several years ago, while working as a telecom engineer, Happy decided it was time to begin pursuing his lifelong dream of owning a restaurant. In order to learn more about how to correctly prepare and serve Indian cuisine in a restaurant setting, Happy began working part-time in the evenings at an Indian restaurant in Dallas.

Then, in 2013 they opened their first location of Urban Tadka in Irving. Fast forward a couple years and Happy decided it was time to begin thinking about a second location. Their friends here in Flower Mound begged Happy and Mona to open their second location here in town as there weren’t many great, local Indian restaurants. So, about a month ago, they opened their second location next to Anamia’s on FM 2499.

I’m going to do my best to explain our meal to you (remember, I’m an inexperienced Indian-food eater). So, I may do so by equating some of the dishes we had to dishes from other types of cuisine you might be more familiar with.

For our appetizer course, Mona chose several delicious options for us to sample including Samosas (fried potato and cheese); Chicken Pakora (chicken fritters made with Indian spices); Tandoori Chicken (yogurt-marinated chicken served with vegetables which was like eating Indian-style fajitas!); and Seekh Kabab (sausage-like chicken).

Our favorites of the appetizers were probably the Samosas and the Tandoori Chicken.

Then we each ordered a different entree dish which come served with Butter Naan, Garlic Naan and rice. Any of the entrees are delicious served over rice or used to dip your Naan in.

We ordered a few veggie-only entrees including: Shahi Paneer (a cheese-based dish); Kofta Lajawab (fried veggie balls served in a cream-based sauce); and Dal Makhni (lentil cooked with garlic, ginger tomatoes).

We also sampled their Chicken Tikka Masala made with a cream-based tomato sauce and their Lamb Shahi Korma.

And if you want something a little different than the average Indian cuisine, we also tried their Veggie Wrap which had an incredible medley of flavors.

Then to top our meal off, we sampled a couple of their traditional Indian desserts – Gulab Jamun (fried dough balls soaked in a sweet syrup – like Indian donut holes!) and Rabri (a sweetened condensed milk dish that kind of reminded me of a rice pudding).

After our lunch at Urban Tadka, I honestly can’t wait to go back and sample more Indian food. Which is something I don’t think I’ve ever said before. But I am totally converted now!

We love that this restaurant is owned and operated by locals who are greatly involved in the community. Mona told us her favorite part of now having a location in their hometown is getting to see so many of her friends come in and support their business.

If you’ve been on the fence about Indian food like some of us at Jay Marks Real Estate have been, jump off the fence and go give Urban Tadka a try!

We hope you have a very safe Independence Day weekend, Foodies! And, as always, we hope you eat very well!

Foodie Friday: National Donut Day at Sara’s Donuts

Happy ‘National Donut Day’ Foodies! Today we decided to revisit a donut shop that we blogged about last year, Sara’s Donuts. Home to everyone in Flower Mound’s favorite donuts located just off of 2499. And yes, you can guess it… we did not hold back when it came time for us to celebrate.

From the decorations, the electric decor, and the friendly staff everything seemed to be in place and ready to serve all of Flower Mound’s donut cravings for the big day. But, what we didn’t see was the preparation Sara and her staff put into every donut and decoration. We talked to Sara and she admitted to us that she had gotten into the store at 1 AM that morning to begin making the donuts to make sure every single one was perfect.

When we got there this morning at 7:15 we were expecting a line and a short wait, but what we saw was nothing short of a donut miracle. A line stretched itself out of the door and wrapped alongside the sidewalk. But, the funniest part was that everyone in the line had the same face that seemed to be a mixture of excitement, hunger, and an envy of every person that walked out with their arms full of the delectable donuts.

When it was our turn to order donuts we talked to Sara herself and she said that in just a couple hours they had already sold more than 3,000 donuts!  She said it was mostly the original type of donuts (glazed, sprinkles or old fashioned) that had been going, but mentioned that other crowd favorites include: Creme Brulee, Red Velvet, Salted Caramel, Maple Bacon, and the S’mores.

However, no matter which donut you most craved you were sure to receive a fluffy and sweet treat that was just right for you.

Sara is a huge contributor to the community and has donated countless hours, money, and donuts to charities in Flower Mound. She even donated to this years Easter Sunrise Service on the actual Flower Mound. Sara is a loving person whom we adore and appreciate for all she does for our town.

We know all these pictures have your mouth watering. So, the next time you want to be “Employee of the Day” at the office or treat the kids to something special on the weekend, definitely head to Sara Donuts to try out some of their incredible breakfast options and to meet their friendly staff!

You just might see us while you’re there… picking up donuts for our own office!

Jay Around Town: Flower Mound Named Top City in United States for Family

Thanks to a study done by Apartment List where they named Flower Mound the best city in the United States for families, I have a feeling there will be a lot more people interested in moving to our charming town this year!

Our neighbors in Frisco took the #2 spot. And there are a couple of other Texas cities that made the top-10 list as well.

Apartment List took a number of factors into account when producing their family-friendliness index including safety, housing affordability, education quality and child friendliness.

To read all about the study and see all of the results, click here.

And congratulations, Flower Mound!

Foodie Friday: Snuggle Up With a Good Cup of Coffee at Edison Coffee Co.

It’s the beginning of November which means it’s the perfect time of year to head to a local coffee house and snuggle up with a delicious cup of coffee. We have some really great local coffee shops to choose from here in the Flower Mound area. And this week we’d love to talk about one that we know is a definite local favorite – Edison Coffee Co. in Highland Village.

Owners J and Melanie McWhorter are mad scientists when it comes to coffee creations and love researching new methods to serve customers the greatest and latest in what coffee has to offer.

And it’s a very cool, relaxing environment to either sit and visit with friends in or take some work you need a quiet spot for.

Edison Coffee Co. serves everything from classic coffee to seasonal drinks like their Spiced Apple Cider (which comes topped with an orange-cinnamon whipped cream) and their Spiced Pecan Cap which is espresso, milk, and spicy cinnamon cardamom syrup, garnished with crushed candied pecans.

And if you want something to munch on along with your beverage, Edison Coffee Co. has you covered there too. You can choose from one of their delicious baked goods (we recommend the pecan roll) or from one of their grilled cheese sandwiches like their Toast-Beast or Sage Apple grilled cheeses.

Another cool thing Edison Coffee Co. offers is a monthly brew class where they host a coffee tasting and cupping for anyone who is intrigued as to how they experiment with new coffees.

We can definitely see ourselves frequenting Edison Coffee Co. when we need a quiet moment or a warm beverage. And if you haven’t tried them out, we’d definitely recommend you get there this rainy, Fall weekend.
